How do I order a cake?
You can start the order process for a cake three ways – fill out our contact form and we will reply by phone or email (whichever you prefer), email us or give us a call at (909) 866-2300. Cakes for bigger groups (15 or more) must be ordered at least a week in advance - by the previous Sunday for the following weekend. Smaller cakes may sometimes be accomodated on shorter notice.
Because our bakery is located in Big Bear Lake and many of our cakes are made for visitors, we are very able to handle the entire order process for a smaller cake and sometimes even larger or even wedding cakes via email and phone. For larger events and weddings, its definitely helpful to meet in person, especially if you want us to work with certain colors or designs. For larger celebration and wedding cakes, we make appointments so that we can ensure that the time is set aside to meet with you. You are welcome to drop in to talk to us about your cake but we may not have the time to meet with you when you drop in so please contact us for an appointment. We do not take cake orders via the contact form – that is for initial contact only.
Why do you require a week's notice for a cake?
Our cakes are baked from scratch, unlike most supermarket cakes which are either taken from a freezer or sent from a central baking warehouse. That means that when you order a cake, we bake it and it requires time to bake, fill and finish. Because on a typical weekend we may have as many as 20 special order cakes, we need to budget time so we can give your cake the attention it deserves. As we said above, we sometimes can accomodate smaller cakes last minute but we appreciate knowing as far in advance as possible if you would like one of our creations.
How do you come up with your cake designs?
We work with you to design a cake that is personal and delicious. For wedding cakes, your design consultion will take into account the design elements of your event, as well as the setting. We invite you to bring your ideas to the meeting – colors, style, inspirations as well as pictures of other cakes you’ve seen that you liked or been inspired by. Your cake will be personal to you and your event and we are excited to help you realize your vision for your wedding cake.
When it comes to celebration cakes for birthdays or anniversaries for example, the sky is the limit and the cake can be simple and fun or whimsical and dramatic. The best way to come up with ideas is to brainstorm either in person or on the phone about the person or people the cake is for – We’ve done everything from a Topsy Turvy cake inspired by the colors of Mardi Gras or a favorite purse, to a cake covered in babies for a baby shower.
What's your payment policy?
Special orders for cookies, pastries, etc. require payment in full at the time of the order. The same rule applies for cake orders made within two weeks of the event date. Payment is accepted in credit card or check or cash, of course. For either wedding or celebration cakes, A $50 deposit is required to reserve your date; the remainder is due two weeks prior to your event. Your order is not confirmed until we have received your deposit via cash, check or credit card. Payment can be made by cash, check or credit card (Visa or Mastercard). Cake orders placed with less than two weeks notice require payment in full by credit card at the time of ordering.
Do you deliver?
Delivery is available in Big Bear Lake Valley, from Onyx Summit to Fawnskin and back. Delivery charges are based on the set up and distance traveled. During holidays and certain weekends, delivery may be unavailable for smaller celebration cakes – we will confirm delivery details when we take your order. If delivery is a special concern, please make sure you ask.
Do you ship?
We ship almost everything we bake except for cakes and hopefully someday we will be able to do that too. Please ask.
The facility I am renting for my reception/party requires that all food including the cake come from a licensed baker/caterer. Are you a licensed baker?
Yes, we are a fully-licensed bakery.
Wedding Cake Specific Questions:
Do you offer tastings?
Yes, I charge a small fee if you would like a cake baked in the flavors you are considering. If you want to taste cupcakes in the flavors I select, the tasting is complimentary. Either way, an appointment is required. We do tastings on Fridays and Sundays. If you would like to order a tasting cake to take home, you can pick it up any day - Weds through Sunday.
Do your cakes taste as good as they look?
Yes! I receive many compliments on how moist and yummy my cakes are. I make all of my cakes and frostings from scratch and not from a mix. I make a "true buttercream" called Italian Meringue Buttercream which is a silky smooth icing that contains butter instead of shortening which is found is Amercian style buttercreams. Some cakes use a covering over the buttercream called fondant. I use marshmallow fondant because I find it the most palatable and it makes a nice flavor and texture contrast to the buttercream.
Can I choose more than one flavor?
Yes with a small caveat – if your event is very small, there may be an additional charge to make sure there is enough cake. Otherwise, we suggest two different flavors if you would like – more than that and unless it’s a very large event, it gets confusing for the serving staff as well as your guests.
Does fondant taste good?
Yes, my fondant is delicious. I also have a chocolate fondant that tastes like tootsie roll.
Do you provide fresh flowers for my cake?
We do not supply flowers. I can connect with your florist to ensure that there are enough flowers for the cake based on the design we discuss. The flowers are not a part of the cost of your cake, they are added to your bill at the florist. Generally, we don’t charge for flower placement on a cake unless it’s a very opulent display of flowers and then you would be told up front what the additional charge would be – just for our time.
When should I reserve my cake?
As soon as you know your date you should reserve your cake. Wedding cakes or large party cakes (over 80 servings) should be reserved at least 6 months and up to 3 months before the event. Party cakes should be reserved at least 2 weeks before. We do our best to accommodate last minute orders.
